It’s a mock exam set jointly by these councils. Schools sit the same papers under similar conditions, so students get a fair idea of where they stand compared with others. The papers follow the NECTA format, so they feel much closer to the real exam than a regular end-of-term test.
Why you should take it seriously
Many students treat mock exams as just another test. That’s a mistake. A joint pre-NECTA exam can:
- Show your weak topics while you still have time to fix them
- Get you used to NECTA-style questions and the way marks are awarded
- Teach you time management, since running out of time is a common reason for losing marks
- Build your confidence before the final exam
How to use these papers properly
- Attempt the paper first. Set a timer and work without notes, as if it were the real exam.
- Mark yourself honestly. Use the marking scheme and be strict with yourself.
- List your mistakes. Write down the topics you struggled with and revise those first.
- Repeat. Redo the questions you got wrong a few days later to check that you’ve really understood them.
If you can, study in a small group. Explaining a topic to a friend is one of the fastest ways to learn it.
